Journal Writing and Journal Entry Ideas

I have been trying to be happier. It takes work, but everyone needs to be happier. The happier I am, the happier everyone around me is. Or maybe that’s just because I’m the Mom. Writing in a journal helps me stay positive sometimes and helps me look back at how I was positive before and it reminds me that I can stay positive again.

I have a few rules for myself when journaling. The first rule for myself is to keep everything positive. There is enough negativity as it is, and I don’t need to hold onto it for the future. Sometimes I need to rant about negativity and doing it on paper helps. I just make sure to do it in a cheap notebook and throw it out immediately after it is written.

Another rule I try to follow is to date my entries. It makes it so much better for if you ever want to look back at them.

I also keep most journal entries very short. I usually don’t have time for much and I won’t write at all if it takes too long so a short list or small quip about something is usually perfect. The one main exception to that is when I wrote down my son’s birth story. I realized I was already forgetting some of the small details a few weeks after he was born so as I nursed I wrote every detail I could remember. It was pages and pages and it took me days but it is worth it to me and it might be to him later on.

One last thing I try not to do while writing in my journal is to back track. Unless it is a big event (like my son’s birth) I won’t let myself feel guilty that I haven’t written in a few days, months, years, etc. And I won’t try to remember what happened for yesterday or for the last three years that I didn’t write a thing. I just put down today’s date and move on.

Here are a few ideas to get you started writing in your journal:

Pregnancy Announcements for Facebook

With our first pregnancy I couldn’t wait to tell everyone, so as soon as we got the news we wanted to post it to facebook, so that we could avoid calling everyone individually to tell them (and having hurt feelings because we called one person before another and so on). We called the new grandparents and then took this picture and posted it with the clues to facebook.

It was a cute way to announce it until I got a few people telling me I really did look pregnant. I was 5 weeks along and shouldn’t have looked any more pregnant than before! So we decided to find another way to tell everyone for the second pregnancy.

I searched all of my pins and decided to do something a little bit more unique. With a second child our Jeep will be full, so we went out to our closest wash (aka dry creek) and took this picture. Click on the picture to see it bigger!

The idea was a little more confusing but still super cute! Once I explained it in the comments everyone got it. At least no one’s calling me fat this time!

5 Reasons I Love My Husband

5 Reasons I Love My Husband

This isn’t a post to make anyone jealous, I’m just trying to show off my husband a little bit and show that I am thankful for everything that he does for me and for who he is. I recently started reading The Happy Wives Club blog and it’s been helping me remember to think positively about my marriage and try to show it. I usually have a hard time showing it, so hopefully this will help!

1. He works hard for our family. He works a job where he has to get up super early and he is not a morning person, so it really means alot to me that he works for us. He also went through a 9 month deployment for us recently. I know it was hard for him, I’m so glad that he did it for us though.

2. He takes the time to listen to me. He also lets me get my way, alot. He always tells me that if I’m happy, he’s happy.
He even let my son help him with fixing the Jeep

3. He tries to be cheap like I am, and DIY stuff. Like fixing the Jeep. He saved us thousands of dollars by staying up super late to finish fixing the truck so that I could use it the next day. (See number one where he is not a morning person and had to get up early.

Look how young he was in 2008!

4. He loves kids. My little brother and sister were young when we started dating and he was great with them. It made me love him more right away! The picture of him and my brother has always been one of my favorite pictures. I love to see him play and interact with our son, as well as see how excited he is about bringing another son into the world soon. He is an amazing dad.

5. He does things that he doesn’t want to do, for me. Like wearing this bright blue tie so that it matched my awesome dress when we went on our cruise this summer. He didn’t want to dress up either.

He also tries to eat new things. That’s a hard one for him, he likes staying in his comfort zone of food and hates trying new things. It may take some nagging but he does try new food for me. It really amazes me what he drags his feet on eating though. Who doesn’t want to try delicious frosting? Or candy? Or pie? I’m glad he does try new things though, because we have found some great new recipes and some of his favorite places to eat.

Today at Arizona Mama: A Few More Traveling Posts

A few years ago my husband and I went on a great trip to New England together. It was a great trip but my memories of it are fading. Read my story over at Arizona Mama.

Also, during all the fun and excitement I have had from traveling recently I missed telling you about my Eating Out of Your Hotel Room post. Better late than never! When we stayed at a Fort Bliss hotel for a couple of weeks we tried to eat out of our hotel room to save money instead of eating out every night. I have plenty of ideas and things to shop for over at Arizona Mama.

The Rock Climbing One Year Old

My husband and I used to both be outdoorsy people. That was a few years ago. We would still like to be, but we spent 3 years of working different schedules and our together time became meals, shopping or tv time because we didn’t have the time to drive to somewhere “outdoorsy” and we don’t have much close, or the weather is too warm.

I was able to go out in a Jeep this past weekend, and we stopped by some cool places in the desert. My son got out and walked around with us. He has just been learning to run and was tripping over everything at first. He’s not used to obstacles in his way (ok, other than his toys that don’t get picked up).

I was amazed that when we got to an area with some large rocks that he started trying to climb right up. He did a great job with it, until he tried using his knees rather than his shoes to get to the top. With holding our hands he made it up to the top of the rocks he was trying to climb and walked around on everything without getting a concussion, so I consider it a success. He must have the bouldering already programmed into his mind from our genes. It was a very exciting thing to see and has me getting ready to enjoy the great outdoors with him more.

Writing on the Wall or the Closet

I was recently watching Once Upon a Time on Netflix and on the first episode they show a glimpse of Emma’s front door and it was awesome! I wanted to copy it, and then the day after I stumbled upon this tutorial on how to do it at applestone drive.

I wanted to make it unique and special to us and I made my husband choose the song. He chose Whatever You Like by TI. He tried to choose another song afterwards that had prettier lyrics or whatever but I had never heard it before and would rather a song that we actually know, even if it is a hip hop song!

I used masking tape to make my lines so that there was less pencil to erase, and I found that alcohol on cotton balls takes off the pencil really well if you mess up. (It also takes sharpie off really well too)

I thought it turned out ok but if I were to do it again I would leave the masking tape on there for the entire time (I took it off after I pencilled everything in.) I also probably wouldn’t waste my time pencilling anything on, I was trying to copy another font but in the end it turned out alot like my handwriting is usually. I also wish I had written a bit smaller.

Arizona Summer Fun!

Arizona is weird, most of us don’t go out in the summer. It’s like everyone else’s winter. We do have Monsoon Season, that brings in some crazy lightning shows and humidity and sometimes even rain and flash floods. We love the rain. If you have ever been in a school when it is raining you would see all of the kids go crazy like they have never seen rain before, and head out to go play in it. Outsiders like my husband, are shocked that we would behave so strangely.

My son got to experience his first good monsoon storm today. We cuddled up in Daddy’s blanket and stood in the garage until the tools started getting too wet (because the rain was going sideways). We went out to the “porch” and got soaked for a few minutes to keep watching. We finally decided to watch inside from the windows.

Colton did really good with it, he wasn’t sure if he liked it or not until there was a really loud burst of thunder that made me jump. He started crying for a couple of minutes but was fine afterwards.

If you are in Arizona and don’t do it already, take the time to enjoy these storms, they are a great experience and we don’t get them very often!

Arizona Mama's Contest

Arizona Mama and Game Stop are doing a giveaway, and they ask some fun questions to get you excited for the holidays.

Mama’s Holiday Wish List Meme

TodaysMama and GameStop are giving away a sleighful of gifts this holiday season and to enter I’m sharing this meme with you.

1. What is your holiday wish for your family?

My holiday wish is for my family to relax from the craziness! We’re too busy and stressed all the time (just like everybody else!) and I would love to relax and get a fresh look at things.

2. What is your Christmas morning tradition?

We wake up super early and line up from the youngest to oldest and run down the stairs to see what santa brought.

3. If you could ask Santa for one, completely decadent wish for yourself, what would it be?

I would want my SD card from my camera (which was in a freak accident that caused it to fall into the Boston Harbor after getting a week’s worth of non-replicable photos, but that’s a story for another blog post)

4. How do you make the holidays special without spending any money?

Spending time with my family and enjoying all the fun traditions of baking, crafting, and enjoying the season.

5. What games did you play with your family growing up?

Uno and Phase Ten were our favorites. We also were blessed with a huge cupboard full of board games that I liked. I’m still working on my own collection, it’s ok though, I’m going yard-sailing tomorrow 🙂

6. What holiday tradition have you carried on from your own childhood?

Most of them I still go home and enjoy with my family, but we make sure that the decorating and music are made special by not starting until after thanksgiving.

7. Where would you go for a Christmas-away-from-home trip?

I would love to go see my grandparents at their home in Utah, there they would have some of the same traditions as we do, but we could have a white Christmas.

8. Check out GameStop (link to: http://bit.ly/gamestop10) and tell us, what are the three top items on your GameStop Wish List this year?

My husband wants a PlayStation so that he can play games with his brother in Massachusetts. We also want the new Call of Duty (I loved fighting Nazi-Zombies!) The other game I know he really enjoyed was the newest Halo.

It was fun answering these questions, it makes me realize that Christmas is coming, and I have lots of crafting to get started on!
